Professional Experience – Conclusion

#PHOTOGRAPHY Magazine

I’ve learned that working for a magazine as a writer is something quite intense, I have been published now, researching exhibitions, photographers, reviews was something key when doing a job like this. It paid off and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I am grateful to have been given an opportunity like this seeing as it will be a great way to get my name out there.

Doing this has definitely overcome one of my major weaknesses which was to talk with new people and do something I do not normally do, something out of my comfort zone. This is a great thing don’t get me wrong, because it means I will not let myself be pigeonholed into doing just one thing I am comfortable with.

It has made me come out of my box a little more and has made me realise that I can accept attention, normally I hate getting attention, it makes me feel uncomfortable. My name being put out there in this magazine is going to bring me attention from a lot of strangers and I am glad about it.

Furthermore working for #PHOTOGRAPHY has also strengthened my writing skills. I tend to get carried away when I write and end up always having to cut down. It has shown me that less can be better and that it’s not so hard to cut things out making room for more important things. My first draft was over 1500 words, Genea told me it was too much seeing as they wanted the review to be spread between two pages on the magazine. I eventually cut it down to around 1000 words and then eventually to what it was, 780 words.

#Picbod13

The whole experience in organising the Picbod13 Exhibition has taught me a lot and has given me great teamwork skills. I have shown myself that I can take on the role of team leader and help organise a great event such as Picbod13.

Before this I did not have the courage to take on a team leader role. The people in my team were great and easy to work with and I was grateful for that.

I feel my communication skills have greatly improved since the start of Picbod13, I managed to lead my team with Ioana and ended up with a great opening night! No complaints, no tense situations, nothing. I definitely felt myself grow stronger in confidence the more I made decisions and solved problems that were raised every now and then towards the exhibition.

#picbodlegacy/#PicbodSantander

The start of #picbodlegacy was nothing more than just small talk and an idea, now it is an exhibition happening in Santander, Spain.

And it has all been organised by us working together with #Picbod13 remote students in Spain. The internet is a powerful tool in our age, and f it were not for it, this idea would have been really hard to put forward.

I am looking forward to continuing this project with my group mates even after #PicbodSantander. Continuing with Pop-up Photobook Club is also something I will not let slip away after Santander.

Organising exhibitions like this and flying out to Santander will be a great experience. Working on #picbodlegacy has definitely been my favourite part of 201MC.

I’ve gotten to meet new people, learn and work with them. Matt allowing us to have a Pop-up Photobook Club in Santander, has made going there even more exciting seeing as we’re the ones organising that too.

Event Photographer – Germany

It has made me feel like a professional photographer, it has given me an insight to the life of being a freelancer, it is enjoyable and a good way of making money. This will come to be useful after I graduate seeing as I will have become my own business. Even though I refused payment, my relatives still paid me a generous sum of money, I was very grateful. This experience has caused me to become more determined with my work.

I overcame my weaknesses of photographing strangers, which is something I was planning to do for my Picbod work, this experience was invaluable seeing as I now feel more confident approaching people and will be something I will have to do a lot in the future.

A weakness I need to overcome is time keeping. I can sometimes be messy in organisation when I have a lot on my plate. This is one thing I need to learn to do well if I am to be a freelancer. I am glad in a way that this has happened now seeing as my uncle and aunt are relatives so they can be lenient when waiting for their images, seeing as they understand I am a student and have a lot to do. If these were customers I did not know this would be a very embarrassing situation.

ZTE, UK – Marketing Research

The work I did for ZTE was useful to me seeing as I now understand how to research ta market if I am to do so again for myself as a business. It has also shown me how to act professionaly and to be prepared for anything.

Again it has helped me overcome my weakness of approaching strangers and talking to them, communication is key in a workplace and to have good communication skills is a good trait I have gained.

——————————————————————————————————————————————

From everything I have done, I have a better understanding of many different work places and have gained a lot of new skills and a lot more experience to jot onto my CV!

I think that doing this module has actually been good because as annoying and tough as I found it at the start, if it were not for the motivation of the module and the opportunities that came from it, I would not have all of this experience and gotten involved in the things I did, until either in the summer holidays or after university.

I am glad to have finished this module and have learned a lot from it and one strange thing I thought about was how I worked independently finding jobs, but then worked as a team when in a job…
